Understanding Edexcel IAL Grade Boundaries: How UMS Converts to A and A* Grades
Demystifying the Edexcel Uniform Mark Scale (UMS) and raw mark conversion. Learn how grade boundaries work and how to strategically plan your A* target with 3G Coaching Hub.

Raw Marks vs. UMS: The Mechanics of Edexcel Grading
One of the most confusing aspects of Pearson Edexcel International A Levels (IAL) for parents and students in Bangladesh is the conversion of Raw Marks into Uniform Mark Scale (UMS) points. Because different examination papers vary in difficulty from year to year, raw grade boundaries fluctuate, but the UMS scale remains completely fixed.
At 3G Coaching Hub, our academic mentors track historical grade boundary trends across Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology to help students forecast and secure their target grades.
The Fixed UMS Grade Boundaries
Regardless of whether a test paper is exceptionally difficult or easy, the total UMS required for standard letter grades remains constant:
- Grade A: 80% of total UMS (e.g. 480/600 in full 6-unit A Level subjects, or 240/300 in AS).
- Grade B: 70% of total UMS (420/600).
- Grade C: 60% of total UMS (360/600).
- Grade D: 50% of total UMS (300/600).
- Grade E: 40% of total UMS (240/600).
The Golden Rule for an A* in Edexcel IAL
Earning an A* is not simply getting 90% overall. The official Pearson Edexcel criterion requires two simultaneous conditions:
- You must achieve an overall Grade A across the entire qualification (at least 480/600 UMS).
- You must achieve at least 90% UMS across the designated A2 units (e.g. 270/300 UMS across P3, P4, and your applied unit in Mathematics, or 270/300 across Units 4, 5, and 6 in Sciences).
At 3G Coaching Hub, our unit-by-unit performance tracking ensures that candidates bank maximum UMS during AS level, reducing pressure when sitting for challenging A2 papers.
