The Biology Dilemma: Why Detailed Paragraphs Often Score Zero

Students often believe that writing lengthy descriptions in A Level Biology (Cambridge 9700 or Edexcel IAL) will guarantee marks. Yet when papers are graded, candidates are shocked to see 1 mark out of 5 awarded. The reason is simple: Biology mark schemes are keyword-specific. If your answer does not contain the exact technical term, no marks are awarded.

1. Master the Keyword Lexicon

Avoid colloquial language. Always replace general descriptions with precise biological terminology:

• Instead of saying "the enzyme dies at high temperature", write: "The high thermal kinetic energy breaks hydrogen and ionic bonds, denaturing the tertiary structure and altering the active site shape so substrates can no longer bind to form enzyme-substrate complexes."
• Instead of "water goes in", write: "Water moves into the cell down a water potential gradient by osmosis through the selectively permeable membrane."

2. Genetics & Pedigree Chart Problems

When solving dihybrid crosses, sex-linkage, or epistasis problems, always lay out:

1. Parental phenotypes and genotypes.
2. Gametes clearly circled.
3. Punnett square with gametes aligned on both axes.
4. Offspring phenotypes with precise ratios.

3. Data Interpretation & Experimental Evaluation (Paper 4 / Unit 5)

Questions presenting graphs of enzyme velocity, photosynthesis light compensation points, or antibody titers demand structured answers: quote specific coordinates, calculate percentage changes, and relate observations directly back to biological theory.
